The Story

Rock Springs, WY was settled in the 1870's  and incorporated in 1888. There were ten coal mines in the downtown area and several outlying "coal camps" that required an extensive workforce. The Union Pacific Coal Compnay owned the majority of the mines an recruited miners from all over the world. ROck Springs became know as the town that was the "Home of 56 Nationalities." IT was reported that Rock Springs was the second largest "Melting Pot" west of the Mississippi River, second only to San Francisco. Most of the original nationalitites are still represented by descendants living in Rock Springs today.
